Suggestions On How To Size A Trench Shield

Hydrostatic (Water) Loading?

Yes | No

Width of Trench Shield?
Typically determined by OD of the pipe or OD of excavator bucket
ID of shield should be at least 12” wider than OD of the pipe bell.
That will allow 6” of clearance on each side of the pipe bell.

Length of Trench Shield?
Shield should be 2’ to 4’ longer than the pipe

Lifting Capacity of Backhoe/Excavator?
1.5 times the weight of the shield and spreaders at 20’ radius at grade
